Rick is a Grand Rapids area native who joined the U.S. Navy at age 17. Accepting the most challenging assignments, Rick moved up through the ranks rapidly, making Chief in just over 10 years. Rick was hand selected by Commander Submarine Forces Atlantic to write controlled work packages for nuclear submarines. In 1987, Rick switched from the Hull Tech rate to Damage Control and assumed the duty of Assistant Fire Marshal aboard the Air Craft Carrier Lexington, then Fire Marshal on the carrier Forrestal. Wrapping up his 23 years active duty, Rick served as the Disaster Preparedness Officer at Naval Ship Repair Facility on Guam and finally as Chief of the Fire Fighting School at Great Lakes Recruit Training Command.
Following his service to our country, Rick obtained his bachelor’s degree from Davenport University with a double major in Computer Networking and Network Security. In 2013, Rick opened The Kirvan Agency where he specializes in Commercial Insurance. He is married to Laura and together they have six children and five grandchildren.
Aside from work and family, Rick is an active member of his church, Berkley Hills Community Church on Ball Ave. I became a Shriner to make a difference in the life of a child in need of medical help for birth defects, burns and other critical conditions. Being a Noble in Saladin Shriners of Grand Rapids, I support Shriners Children’s Hospitals. As a veteran, Rick proudly supports fellow veterans through the American Legion as a member of Post 528 in Alto, a Life Time member of the VFW.
